John Christie writes, “I was born a fairly large land-owner. Therefore my job in life is to lead, to build a new world, and to build a better world…I married an Opera Singer. Therefore my job was to bring back to this country what was normal on the Continent, but hardly existed in England. The result is Glyndebourne, where we have to do all we can not to sell the seats, in the difficult purpose of trying to get them more fairly distributed. The success is almost unbelievable. Furthermore, everyone here is happy. There is no snobbery. The gratitude and good will shown to us is almost unbelievable. All this, I think, must primarily derive from the idealistic purpose on which our work is based."
