Audrey Christie writes, 04 October 1951, “Ever since the tragic news of Fritz’s death I have wanted to write to you. Somehow this tragic affair has wiped out all the years between the beginning of the war and these last two Seasons and I found that I was thinking so much more about the time when John came back from his original visit to Copenhagen and of all the talk of who should come with him and the final news that you were to come as Producer (and our excitement and speculation!), and the first Season here, and the chaos and confusion and the superb success that came out of it; my own bewilderment both as hostess to these Great Men and my exhaustion as ‘buffer state’ between the Great Men and the existing situation, and my awe and inferiority complex at working under them and the thrill of rehearsals and all I was learning from them. I do hope that you have realized (and that Fritz realized) how conscious we have always been of all that we owed to your combined artistic conception of what we hoped to establish and you, together, so magnificently accomplished.”
