John Christie writes, “Glyndebourne is a three-legged stool - a conductor, producer and I. Policy and details are settled by free discussion and expression of opinion, but are never on the basis that one leg will collapse. This condition is fundamental. We had rejoiced at the prospect of working with you. We admire your work. But our policy comes before individuals.”
He continues, “Our policy is to use the young and fresh artists rather than stars who are often ghosts of their past excellence. Their choice is the responsibility of three individuals, conductor, producer and even of me.”
