Scope and content
Carl Ebert writes, “Again and again I have heard you, Grete and Adolf take the view that human relations and in art the only thing that counts is a straight character, and I loved you for it. To-day that sounds like cheap pathos and seems like a farce to me, unless you reply by renouncing the repulsive juristic acrobatics of your spokesman Wolff and stand up for this injustice, as ugly and brutal to an old friend and collaborator as can be conceived. Although the wrong has been done and the damage irreparable, I - richer by the most painful experience of my life - should like to see our ten years’ collaboration ended in a way which would allow me to look back on it with less bitterness.”
