Caplat, Moran (Author)
Ebert, Carl (Professor) (Receiver)
Piper, John CH (Subject) - Scope and content
- Moran Caplat writes, “I saw John Piper today and although he is technically free to do ‘The Rake’s Progress’ I am not sure that he will agree. He has not got a very high opinion of the libretto and in addition is not a sufficient of an admirer of Hogarth (although he respects him) to feel inspired in the way that Stravinsky and Auden have been to build on Hogarth’s original creation. In short, John is not at all convinced that ‘The Rake’s Progress’ is a first class work. I think he feels it to be rather too much of a mongrel already. I have left him the score and libretto for further study…”
