Scope and content: NB: Letters written by Carl Ebert to Moran Caplat 02 January, 09 March, 12 September & 16 December 1957 are written in German for translation by Ellen Morgenthau. The translations are also in the file.

In letter of 03 April 1957, Moran Caplat states -
“John is going back to Glyndebourne soon. He is better but will have to live a very quiet life with at least one nurse in attendance for some time yet and I fear that he will never be able to be quite his old vigorous self again.”

In letter of 21 October 1957, Moran Caplat states -
“Although we had packed houses at Glyndebourne last season and although the amount of financial support going to the Society and Trust is increasing we are only just able to keep pace with increasing costs and there is no surplus money to subsidise visits away from Glyndebourne.”

In a letter of 25 November, 1957 Moran Caplat states -
“Lorengar is still in question. You want her very much for the Countess but neither John nor George Christie are very keen on this idea. I myself would like to see her do the Countess though I do think it is you who will have the biggest job with her if she does.”

In telegram of 05 December, 1957 Carl Ebert states -
“Insisting on my responsibility as Artistic Director can not agree with rejection Lorengar for Countess letter follows.”
[Pilar Lorengar played Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze Di Figaro during the 1958 Glyndebourne Festival]
