Audrey Christie writes, 10 June 1947, “Last year we were responsible financially for the Britten Group, although with no artistic responsibility as we simply took them over and gave them the opportunity to start. Now, with no sign of gratitude for the enormous pains and colossal £:d:d: lost over their tour with “Lucretia”, they have formed their own Company, and although (out of desire to forward this well-intentioned movement which one hopes may take on finally the true stature of English Opera), we have this year invited them to open here, we are in no way responsible financially or otherwise. On the other hand, “Orfeo” is our own re-start of our pre-War classical Festival and to have this event ignored by the “Sunday Times” would be from our point of view most serious, especially as in truth we are struggling for our very existence in face of the State-supported Covent Garden and Sadler’s Wells plus whisky-supported Pomeroy…On my part this is literally a cry for HELP!”
