Rudolf Bing writes, 17 October 1939, “We want Carl Ebert as Producer.; he is still a German Subject but he, as you know, left Germany with the Busches years ago when the Nazi Regime began to interfere with them. None of them are Jews but they refused to have their Art interfered with by Politicians, at least to the extent to which the Totalitarian Politicians interfere. Hitler has, year after year, sent representatives over to try and persuade them to return. They have refused to do so.”
He continues, “Ebert got caught in Vienna during the Anschluss where he was completing an important production in the Burg Theater. They insisted on him taking his curtains and he was the only man in the Theatre who refused to wear a swastika. He escaped from Vienna immediately afterwards; that is for some reason the Nazis let him go.”
