Rudolf Bing writes, 16 December 1939, “I am terribly busy with our ‘Beggar’s Opera’ production and you can imagine four weeks before the opening night the trouble and work involved. We had at the last moment to find a new Conductor as very unfortunately Oppenheim could not get his permit. Gielgud’s Stage Rehearsals are actually starting tomorrow and Motley’s designs for scenery and costumes - very delightful indeed - are already in hand and work is progressing satisfactorily. We have our cast more or less ready and unless unforeseen events upset the whole plan, I think we may look forward to a successful venture.”
